SEL (Family Time)
Family time is a time where both classes come together to learn SEL Skills. These skills help our students become cooperative with each other, teach students how to handle their emotions, help us build connections, and so much more. These skills build a positive environment within our classes where students learn to handle conflicts and work together to help each other learn. These skills are also an ongoing learning experience that each student will keep on learning about and practicing throughout their schooling here in ASD. Math
Math is taught by Mrs. Allen. Mrs. Allen's home class participates in math in the morning and Ms. Tousignant's home class participates in the afternoon. The math block is designed to give as much small group attention as possible to the students while encouraging active, independent learning. As the year progresses the students will be encouraged to help and teach each other. This time is set up as: warm-up (review of previously learned skills), new learning for first grade whole group, and then 3 different stations. During stations Mrs. Allen teaches the second graders their new lesson, then the rest of the time is small groups for more individualized learning whether it is a small group of students who need a reteach or more practice with something or a small group who needs more of a challenge. When the students are not with Mrs. Allen in small group they are working independently on the new skill taught or playing a math game that helps them with fact fluency or a review of skills previously taught.

Focus:
At home: You will notice the math homework is a behind what we are working on. The homework is a review of what we have already done in order to keep skills fresh and practiced. This homework should be independent overall for your child. If you would like to work on other skills consider the following:
-Fast facts: work on make 10 and doubles facts either orally or by flashcards, these should start becoming automatic
-Time: If you have an analog clock in your house or see them when you are out and about, challenge your child to read you the time. They should be fluent with time to the hour and starting to understand to the half hour.
-Shapes: Point out shapes while you are driving or around the house. They should be able to identify the name and number of sides and vertices.
-Ask how many more questions: "I have 5 green beans, you have 12, how many more do you have?"
-Money: We work a lot on coin identifying and counting coins of the same value. Let them count your coins, this will require support if you mix them (quarters with nickels and pennies for example).
